Mendaera also has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/mendaera-brings-in-24m-for-medical-platform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">financial support<\/a> from Dr. Fred Moll, the Auris and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/tag\/intuitive-surgical\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Intuitive Surgical<\/a> co-founder who is known as &#8220;the father of robotic surgery.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmong the innovators in the field, Mendaera\u2019s efforts to make robotics commonplace earlier in the healthcare continuum are unique and can potentially change the future of care delivery,\u201d stated Moll in a release.<\/p>\n<p>But Mendaera isn\u2019t a surgical robotics developer. Instead, it said it is working on technology that combines robotics, artificial intelligence, and real-time imaging in a compact device \u201cno bigger than your fist\u201d for procedures including percutaneous instruments.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_578245\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Josh-DeFonzo-Mendaera-768x499-1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-578245\" class=\"wp-image-578245 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Josh-DeFonzo-Mendaera-768x499-1-300x195.jpeg\" alt=\"Mendaera co-founder and CEO Josh DeFonzo.\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Josh-DeFonzo-Mendaera-768x499-1-300x195.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Josh-DeFonzo-Mendaera-768x499-1-150x97.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Josh-DeFonzo-Mendaera-768x499-1-366x238.jpeg 366w, https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Josh-DeFonzo-Mendaera-768x499-1.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-578245\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mendaera co-founder and CEO Josh DeFonzo. | Source: Mendaera<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Josh DeFonzo, co-founder and CEO of Mendaera, offered new details about his startup\u2019s technology and goals in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.massdevice.com\/avail-medsystems-tech-sold-to-mendaera-robotics-startup-defonzo-interview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an exclusive interview, as he announced the acquisition<\/a> of operating room telepresence technology that Avail Medsystems developed.<\/p>\n<p>Avail, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.massdevice.com\/avail-medsystems-abruptly-shuts-down\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shut down<\/a> last year, was founded by former Intuitive Surgical and Shockwave Medical leader Daniel Hawkins, who\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.massdevice.com\/avail-daniel-hawkins-vista-ai-ceo-mri-imaging-automation-software\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">now CEO at MRI automation software startup Vista.ai<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re a very different form factor of robot that focuses on what I\u2019ll describe as gateway procedures,\u201d DeFonzo said. &#8220;It\u2019s a different category of robots that we don\u2019t believe the market has seen before [as] we\u2019re designing and developing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those procedures include vascular access for delivery of devices or therapeutic agents; access to organs for surgical or diagnostics purposes; and pain management procedures such as regional anesthesia, neuraxial blocks, and chronic pain management. DeFonzo declined to go into much detail about specific procedures because the product is still in the development stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe procedures that we are going after are those procedures that involve essentially a needle or a needle-like device and real-time imaging, and as such, there are specific procedures that we think the technology will perform very well at,\u201d he said. \u201cHowever, the technology is also designed to be able to address any suite of procedures that use those two common denominators: real-time imaging and a percutaneous instrument.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And the reason that\u2019s an important point to make is that oftentimes, when you are a specialist who performs these procedures, you don\u2019t perform just one,&#8221; added DeFonzo. &#8220;You perform a number of procedures: central venous catheters [CVCs], peripherally inserted central catheter [PICC] lines, regional anesthetic blocks that are in the interscalene area or axial blocks. The technology is really designed to enable specialists \u2014 of whom there are many \u2014 the ability to perform these procedures more consistently with a dramatically lower learning curve.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-568305\" src=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/RSE24_728x90_RegOpen_Vs1.jpg\" alt=\"SITE AD for the 2024 Robotics Summit registration.\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.roboticssummit.com\/\">Learn from Agility Robotics, Amazon, Disney, Teradyne and many more.<\/a><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Mendaera marks progress to date<\/h2>\n<p>Preclinical testing has shown the technology has improved accuracy and efficiency in comparison with freehand techniques, regardless of the individual\u2019s skill level, asserted DeFonzo. User research spanned around 1,000 different healthcare providers ranging from emergency medicine and interventional radiology to licensed medical doctors, nurse practitioners, and physician\u2019s assistants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt seems to be very stable across user types,\u201d he said. \u201cSo whether somebody is a novice, of intermediate skill level, or advanced, the robot is a great leveler in terms of being able to provide consistent outcomes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whereas when you look at the same techniques performed freehand, the data generally tracks with what you would expect: lesser skilled people are less accurate; more experienced people are more accurate,&#8221; DeFonzo noted. &#8220;But even in that most skilled category, we do find that the robot makes a fairly remarkable improvement on accuracy and timeliness of intervention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the startup expanded into a production facility to accommodate growth and volume manufacturing for the product\u2019s launch and said its system will be powered by handheld ultrasound developer Butterfly Network\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/butterfly-network-bring-ultrasound-chip-tech-surgical-robotics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ultrasound-on-Chip<\/a> technology.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_578244\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Butterfly-Network-ultrasound-on-chip-IQ-iphone-768x499-1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-578244\" class=\"wp-image-578244 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Butterfly-Network-ultrasound-on-chip-IQ-iphone-768x499-1-300x195.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Butterfly-Network-ultrasound-on-chip-IQ-iphone-768x499-1-300x195.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Butterfly-Network-ultrasound-on-chip-IQ-iphone-768x499-1-150x97.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Butterfly-Network-ultrasound-on-chip-IQ-iphone-768x499-1-366x238.jpeg 366w, https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Butterfly-Network-ultrasound-on-chip-IQ-iphone-768x499-1.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-578244\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Butterfly Network won FDA clearance in 2017 for the Butterfly iQ for iPhone. | Source: Butterfly Network<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mendaera\u2019s aim is to eventually deploy these systems \u201cto the absolute edge of healthcare,\u201d starting with hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers and other procedural settings, said DeFonzo. The company will then push to alternative care sites and primary care clinics as evidence builds to support the technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe entire mission for the company is to ensure essentially that high-quality intervention is afforded to every patient at every care center at every encounter,\u201d he said. \u201cWe want to be able to push that as far to the edge of healthcare as possible, and that\u2019s certainly something we aim to do over time, but it\u2019s not our starting point explicitly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As a practical starting point, however, we do see ourselves working in the operating room, in the interventional radiology suite, and likely in cath labs to facilitate these gateway procedures, the access that is afforded adjacent to a larger intervention,\u201d DeFonzo acknowledged.<\/p>\n<p>Mendaera said it expects to submit its system to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for review through the 510(k) pathway by the end of 2024 with the goal of offering the product clinically in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we really want to do with this technology is make sure that we\u2019re leveraging not just technological trends, but really important forces in the space \u2014 robotics, imaging and AI \u2014 to dramatically improve access to care,\u201d said DeFonzo. \u201cWhether you\u2019re talking about something as basic as a vascular access procedure or something as complex as transplant surgery or neurosurgery, we need to leverage technology to improve patient experience.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need to leverage technology to help hospitals become more financially sustainable, ultimately improving the healthcare system as we do it,&#8221; he said. &#8220;So our vision was to utilize technology to provide solutions that aggregate across many millions, if not tens and hundreds of millions, of procedures to make a ubiquitous technology that really helps benefit our healthcare system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mendaera&#8217;s research and development group will work with employees from Avail on how to best add <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicaldesignandoutsourcing.com\/medtronic-neurovascular-avail-medsystems-stroke-care-innovation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the telepresence technology<\/a>&nbsp;to the mix.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see a lot of power in what the Avail team has built,\u201d DeFonzo said. \u201cBringing that alongside robotic technology, our imaging partnerships and AI, we think that we\u2019ve got a really good opportunity to digitize to a further extent not only expertise in the form of the robot, but [also] clinical judgment, like how do you ensure that the right clinician and his or her input is present ahead of technologies like artificial intelligence that hopefully augment all users in an even more scalable way.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mendaera is working on medical technology that combines robotics, AI, and real-time imaging in a compact device.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":884,"featured_media":567707,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"rbr50_analysis":"","rbr50_state":"","rbr50_country":"","rbr50_description":"","rbr50_numemps":"","rbr50_text_taxonomy_radio":null,"rbr50_text_taxonomy_select":null,"rbr50_url":"","rbr50_yearfounded":"","_genesis_hide_title":false,"_genesis_hide_breadcrumbs":false,"_genesis_hide_singular_image":false,"_genesis_hide_footer_widgets":false,"_genesis_custom_body_class":"","_genesis_custom_post_class":"","_genesis_layout":"","ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1382,1770,1277,1401,2012,2008,2016],"tags":[4102],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.5 -
