The Turkish company has also developed automation for seeding, irrigation, disinfestation, and weeding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to Afara, 5% to 20% of annual<span class=\"VIpgJd-yAWNEb-VIpgJd-fmcmS-sn54Q\"> cotton yields are unpicked by mechanical harvesters or are dropped to the ground during harvest. This valuable resource is currently either wasted or must be gathered by hand, it said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/afara.com.tr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">company<\/a> said <span class=\"VIpgJd-yAWNEb-VIpgJd-fmcmS-sn54Q\">AFARA-COTTON is an<\/span><span class=\"VIpgJd-yAWNEb-VIpgJd-fmcmS-sn54Q\"> all-electric, self-driving platform to address this waste. It is currently selling its systems only in Turkey and select European countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-568305\" src=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/RSE24_728x90_RegOpen_Vs1.jpg\" alt=\"SITE AD for the 2024 Robotics Summit registration.\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.roboticssummit.com\/\">Learn from Agility Robotics, Amazon, Disney, Teradyne and many more.<\/a><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr \/>\n<h2>AFARA-COTTON cleans two rows at once<\/h2>\n<p>Computer engineer \u00d6mer Muratl\u0131, the son of a farmer, invented the Afara Agricultural Robot in 2019. His family, which harvested cotton, had asked him to build a robot to collect remaining cotton. He patented the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/category\/markets-industries\/ag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agricultural<\/a> platform and brought it to the working prototype stage.<\/p>\n<p>Afara Agricultural Technologies was established in 2023 with investment from the crowdfunding platform Fonlab\u00fcy\u00fcs\u00fcn. The <a href=\"https:\/\/afara.com.tr\/#robotlar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">company<\/a> is continuing work on a mass-production model.<\/p>\n<p>The video animation above shows that the robot has four cameras, two lidar sensors, and ultrasonic sensors. Cameras scan the ground looking for the stray seed cotton.<\/p>\n<p>An AI-based perception model identifies the seed cotton and deploys a suction cup to vacuum up the seed cotton and collect it in a central bailing area in the middle of the machine. The startup said it is targeting a 90% efficiency rate.<\/p>\n<p>AFARA-COTTON autonomously traverses the field, avoiding obstacles as it cleans up two rows at a time. Currently, as the robot completes a row, the operator needs to manually realign it onto the next row and reinitiate the collection process.<\/p>\n<p>The robot can accumulate up to 200 kg (440 lb.) before it needs to be emptied. While collecting the cotton, the picker drives up to 3.2 kph (2 mph), and it can operate for up to six hours on a single charge.
