Bottom row: Salidrone, M4, and Zipline&#8217;s delivery drone. | Source: NVIDIA<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Outside the glare of the klieg lights that ChatGPT commanded this past year, a troupe of autonomous machines nudged forward the frontiers of robotics, according to NVIDIA.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inner3\"><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">Here are six that showed promise, swimming, diving, gripping, seeing, strolling and flying through 2023.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"inner3\">Ella smart stroller makes a splash at CES<\/h2>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\">\n<p>Ella \u2014 a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/blog\/ella-stroller-jetson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">smart stroller<\/a> from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gluxkind.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gl\u00fcxkind Technologies<\/a>, a startup in Vancouver, Canada \u2014 kicked off the year when it was named an honoree in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/ces-2023-robotics-innovation-award-winners-announced\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CES 2023 Innovation Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The canny carriage uses computer vision running on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/autonomous-machines\/embedded-systems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NVIDIA Jetson edge AI platform<\/a>&nbsp;to follow parents. Its AI-powered abilities, like smart braking and a rock-my-baby mode, captured the attention of media outlets like&nbsp;<i>Good Morning America<\/i>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<i>The Times of London<\/i>&nbsp;as well as an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/theaipodcast\/ai-stroller\">NVIDIA AI Podcast interview<\/a>&nbsp;with its husband-and-wife cofounders.<\/p>\n<p>A member of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/startups\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NVIDIA Inception<\/a>, a free program for cutting-edge startups, Gl\u00fcxkind was one of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/blog\/jetson-innovation-awards-ces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seven companies<\/a>&nbsp;with NVIDIA-powered products recognized at the Las Vegas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/robots-at-ces-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">event<\/a> in January. They included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/tag\/john-deere\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Deere<\/a> for its fully autonomous tractor<\/li>\n<li>AGRIST for its robot that automatically harvests bell peppers<\/li>\n<li>Inception member <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/tag\/Skydio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Skydio<\/a> for its drone that can fly at a set distance and height without manual intervention<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/sidewalk-delivery-robot-company-neubility-secures-24-2m-investment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Neubility<\/a>, another Inception member, for its self-driving delivery robot<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/tag\/Seoul-Robotics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Seoul Robotics<\/a>, a partner in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/autonomous-machines\/intelligent-video-analytics-platform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NVIDIA Metropolis<\/a>&nbsp;vision AI software, for its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/blog\/seoul-robotics-autonomy-through-infrastructure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Level 5 Control Tower<\/a> that can turn standard vehicles into self-driving care<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/?s=whill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WHILL<\/a> for its one-person vehicle that automatically guides a user inside places like airports or hospitals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"su-youtube su-u-responsive-media-yes\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mAsSqKy9AdE?\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture\" title=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h2><b>mGripAI dexterously packs food<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Bedford, Mass.-based Inception member <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/tag\/Soft-Robotics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Soft Robotics<\/a> introduced its mGripAI system to an $8 trillion food industry hungry for automation. It combines 3D vision and AI to grasp delicate items such as chicken wings, attracting investors that include Tyson Foods and Johnsonville.<\/p>\n<p>Soft Robotics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/soft-robotics-mgripai-uses-simulation-to-train-in-nvidia-isaac-sim\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">uses<\/a> the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/omniverse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NVIDIA Omniverse<\/a>&nbsp;platform and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/developer.nvidia.com\/isaac-sim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NVIDIA Isaac Sim<\/a>&nbsp;robotics simulator to create 3D renderings of chicken parts on conveyor belts or in bins. With help from AI and the ray-tracing capabilities of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/design-visualization\/ampere-architecture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NVIDIA RTX<\/a> technology, the robot gripper can handle as many as 100 picks per minute, even under glare or changing light conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re all in on Omniverse and Isaac Sim, and that\u2019s been working great for us,\u201d David Weatherwax, senior director of software engineering at Soft Robotics, said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/blog\/isaac-soft-robotics-simulation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">January interview<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"mGripAI Poultry Automation\" width=\"740\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YhfdyOa-XPQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><b>TM25S provides a keen eye in the factory<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>In a very different example of industrial digitalization, electronics manufacturer Quanta is inspecting the quality of its products using<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/blog\/techman-robot-isaac-sim\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&nbsp;the TM25S<\/a>, an AI-enabled robot from its subsidiary, Techman Robot.<\/p>\n<p>Using Omniverse, Techman built a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/omniverse\/solutions\/digital-twins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&nbsp;digital twin<\/a>&nbsp;of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/techman-robot-presents-tm-ai-cobot-tm255-at-irex-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inspection robot<\/a> \u2014 as well as the product to be inspected \u2014 in Isaac Sim. Programming the robot in simulation reduced time spent on the task by over 70%, compared with programming manually on the real robot.<\/p>\n<p>Then, with optimization tools in Isaac Sim, Techman explored a massive number of program options in parallel on NVIDIA GPUs. The end result, shown in the video below, was an efficient solution that reduced the cycle time of each inspection by 20%.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Techman AI Robot for Quality Inspection | Developed in Isaac Sim and powered by Omniverse\" width=\"740\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/b2yjubjQ5Xs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><b>Saildrone takes to the seas for data science<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Saildrone, another Inception startup in Alameda, Calif., created uncrewed watercraft that can cost-effectively gather data for science, fisheries, weather forecasting and more.<\/p>\n<p>NVIDIA Jetson modules <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/blog\/saildrone-autonomous-oceanic-monitoring-jetson-deepstream\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">process data streams<\/a> from their sensors, some with help from NVIDIA Metropolis vision AI software such as <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.nvidia.com\/deepstream-sdk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NVIDIA DeepStream<\/a>, a development kit for intelligent video analytics.<\/p>\n<p>The video below shows how three of Saildrone&#8217;s smart sailboats are helping evaluate ocean health around the Hawaiian Islands.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"2023 UH M\u0101noa Ocean Chemistry Mission\" width=\"740\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ev2mLKXkfwY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><b>Caltech M4 sets its sights on Mars<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The next stop for one autonomous vehicle may be the red planet.<\/p>\n<p>Caltech\u2019s Multi-Modal Mobility Morphobot, or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/blog\/caltech-nasa-mars-rover-robot-jetson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M4<\/a>, can configure itself to walk, fly, or drive at speeds up to 40 mph (see video below). An M42 version is now in development at NASA as a Mars rover candidate and has attracted interest for other uses such as reconnaissance in fire zones.<\/p>\n<p>Since&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-023-39018-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">releasing a paper<\/a>&nbsp;on it in&nbsp;<i>Nature Communications<\/i>, the team has been inundated with proposals for the shape-shifting drone built on the NVIDIA Jetson platform.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"M4 Drives and Flies Around Caltech&#039;s Campus\" width=\"740\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/J91jTI2-k_U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><b>Zipline delivery drones fly high<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The year ended on a high note with Zipline <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/nvidia-jetson-supports-zipline-drone-deliveries-as-omniverse-enables-amazon-digital-twins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announcing<\/a> that its delivery drones flew more than 55 million miles and made more than 800,000 deliveries since the company\u2019s start in 2011. The San Francisco-based company said it now completes one delivery every 70 seconds, globally.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a major milestone for the Inception startup, the field it&#8217;s helping pioneer, and the customers who can receive everything from pizza to vitamins up to seven faster than by truck.<\/p>\n<p>Zipline\u2019s latest drone uses two Jetson Orin NX modules. The undergrad at the Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences aspires to one day launch a robotics startup.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, an engineering manager in Copenhagen who\u2019s a self-described&nbsp;<i>Star Wars<\/i>&nbsp;fanatic designed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/blog\/goran-vuksic-pit-droid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an AI-powered droid<\/a>&nbsp;based on an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/autonomous-machines\/embedded-systems\/jetson-orin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano Developer Kit<\/a>.
