According to Sanctuary AI, the integration of vision systems and touch sensors, which offer tactile feedback, plays a pivotal role in the realization of embodied artificial general intelligence (AGI).<\/p>\n<p>It has already secured patents for numerous technologies developed both internally and through strategic acquisitions from external sources. The company acquired the latest assets from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/giant-ai\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Giant.AI Inc.<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tangible-research.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tangible Research<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sanctuary AI is one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/humanoids-ready-to-take-first-steps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">several robotics companies developing humanoid robots<\/a>. The company<a href=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/sanctuary-ai-unveils-general-purpose-humanoid-robot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> unveiled the Phoenix humanoid robot<\/a> in May 2023, when it publicly demonstrated its sixth-generation unit. This was also the first generation of humanoids from Sanctuary to feature bipedal locomotion.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-568305\" src=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/RSE24_728x90_RegOpen_Vs1.jpg\" alt=\"SITE AD for the 2024 Robotics Summit registration.\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.roboticssummit.com\/\">Learn from Agility Robotics, Amazon, Disney, Teradyne and many more.<\/a><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Sanctuary AI takes touch-oriented approach<\/h2>\n<p>Unlike its competitors, Sanctuary AI said it has taken a different approach by starting with an intense investment in grasping capabilities combined with hand-eye coordination of human-analog hands and arms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Geordie Rose, co-founder and CEO of Sanctuary, was one of three executives from humanoid robotics companies to speak at RoboBusiness 2023&#8217;s keynote on the &#8220;State of Humanoid Robotics Development.&#8221; He described the importance of humanoids being able to do real work by manipulating any object that they might encounter.<\/p>\n<p>This philosophy is a cornerstone to Sanctuary&#8217;s development roadmap, and Rose said it is essential to the success of humanoid robots in the future. All of these are key to enabling any robot that must interact with and manipulate objects in unstructured or dynamic environments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn dynamic and unstructured environments, coordination between touch and vision is an absolute necessity,\u201d said Rose. \u201cWe spent over a year performing industry-wide analysis before acquiring Jeremy\u2019s team. Beyond the functional sensitivity, the technology is designed to be simulateable, enabling us to fast-track our AI model development.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to Rose, &#8220;Sanctuary AI is focused on creating the world\u2019s first human-like intelligence in general-purpose robots that will help address the massive labor shortages that organizations are facing around the world. Sanctuary AI&#8217;s patents from the past few years include &#8220;software-compensated robotics&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/patentcenter.uspto.gov\/applications\/16237721\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USPTO US <span class=\"MatchFromOtherFieldStyle\">11312012<\/span> B2<\/a>), which uses recurrent neural networks and image processing to control the operation and\/or movement of an end effector.<\/p>\n<p>A patent for &#8220;systems, devices, and methods for grasping by multi-purpose robots&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/patentcenter.uspto.gov\/applications\/17566595\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USPTO <span class=\"MatchFromOtherFieldStyle\">11717963<\/span> B2<\/a>) describes the training and operation of semi-autonomous robots to complete different work objectives.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the most cryptic of this group of patents is &#8220;haptic photogrammetry In robots and methods for operating the same&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/patentcenter.uspto.gov\/applications\/18092157\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USPTO US <span class=\"MatchFromOtherFieldStyle\">11717974<\/span> B1<\/a>), which describes methods for operating robots based on environment models including haptic data.<\/p>\n<p>The market for humanoids has made notable progress in 2023, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/tag\/humanoid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plenty of product announcements<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/tag\/Agility-Robotics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Agility Robotics<\/a> offers one of the most mature systems on the market and has announced publicly that it is testing its robots in both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/humanoids-getting-their-feet-wet-in-logistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon warehouses<\/a> and at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therobotreport.com\/gxo-logistics-putting-digit-humanoid-to-test\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GXO Logistics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You can see Phoenix do things like<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><a title=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4cnZe4oM2Aw\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4cnZe4oM2Aw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">placing items in a plastic bag<\/a>,<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><a title=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=no_fN9l7088\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=no_fN9l7088\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stacking blocks<\/a>, and more as part of Sanctuary AI&#8217;s \u201cRobots Doing Stuff\u201d series on its<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><a title=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@sanctuaryai\/featured\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@sanctuaryai\/featured\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube channel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Robots Doing Stuff #56 -
