Credit: Licensed from AdobeStock<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A new standard released by the ASTM defines the types of objects that might be encountered during the operation of an Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR) or Automatic Guided Vehicle (AGV).<\/p>\n<p>The new standard documents a list of common terms that describe these objects, and provides a common language for the use of both operators and manufacturers of this equipment. The standard was developed by ASTM\u2019s committee on robotics, automation, and autonomous systems (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.astm.org\/get-involved\/technical-committees\/committee-f45\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">F45<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>This standard (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.astm.org\/f3588-22.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">F3588<\/a>) provides specifications for a set of reference objects to act as obstacles or infrastructure for testing the capabilities of A-UGVs. The objects represent those common in many manufacturing environments. According to ASTM International F45 committee chair Adam Norton, this helps both developers of A-UGVs and those looking to use them with evaluating their systems.<\/p>\n<p>The committee surveyed both end users and manufacturers to assemble the list of items that might be encountered by an autonomous, unmanned robot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"subsec1 cdone2\">The survey results are listed here and are considered example objects found in warehousing\/manufacturing, healthcare, domestic, and retail environments:<\/p>\n<div class=\"SectionLevel3\">\n<p class=\"subsec2 cdone2\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span class=\"Head4 cdone\">4.1.1<\/span>&nbsp;Pallets, racking, wheeled carts;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"SectionLevel3\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\n<p class=\"subsec2 cdone2\"><span class=\"Head4 cdone\">4.1.2<\/span>&nbsp;Other A-UGVs or AMRs;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"SectionLevel3\">\n<p class=\"subsec2 cdone2\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span class=\"Head4 cdone\">4.1.3<\/span>&nbsp;Steps or stairs;<\/p>\n<p class=\"subsec2 cdone2\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span class=\"Head4 cdone\">4.1.4<\/span>&nbsp;Tables or desks, ladders;<\/p>\n<p class=\"subsec2 cdone2\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span class=\"Head4 cdone\">4.1.5<\/span>&nbsp;Cables or hoses, or both;<\/p>\n<p class=\"subsec2 cdone2\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span class=\"Head4 cdone\">4.1.6<\/span>&nbsp;Chairs, overhangs (that is, on objects);<\/p>\n<p class=\"subsec2 cdone2\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span class=\"Head4 cdone\">4.1.7<\/span>&nbsp;IV poles; and<\/p>\n<p class=\"subsec2 cdone2\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span class=\"Head4 cdone\">4.1.8<\/span>&nbsp;Forklifts\/forklift tines.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cFor example, one object is a pallet that an A-UGV may need to avoid while navigating through a facility; another object is a rack that an A-UGV may need to position itself in front of in order to dock with it,\u201d says Norton.<\/p>\n<p>The standard, designated <span class=\"astm-type-body--lead title-text-bold\"><b class=\"sku\">ASTM&nbsp;F3588-22<\/b><\/span>, was released on November 9, 2022, and you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.astm.org\/f3588-22.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">purchase a copy here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The group is next going to develop standards concerned with dynamic obstacles, including those that move and change position.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ASTM&#8217;s new standard outlines common objects encountered by AMRs and AGVs.
